Our Military Connection

Liberty County hosts Fort Stewart, the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi River and headquarters of the 3rd Infantry Division.

Fort Stewart boasts 51 Medal of Honor recipients and was named an Army Community of Excellence in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009, 2012, 2015 and was a bronze winner in 2018. About 19,000 soldiers are stationed at Fort Stewart, and an estimated 300 soldiers known as "Heroes for Hire" leave the service each month with many seeking private-sector jobs in the Liberty County area.

Fort Stewart Supplemental Labor Force  

For Liberty County industries, Fort Stewart's exiting and retiring labor force provides access to a dynamic pool of talent that has technical training and strong work ethics. 

     3,600 "Heroes for Hire" exit the military at Fort Stewart annually
         •    22 year olds electing to leave the Army after first tour of duty
         •    38 - 40 year olds wanting to begin their second career after 20 years in the Army
         •    Prompt, cross-trained and computer savvy

     10,000+ military spouses living in or adjacent to Liberty County
         •    95% have high school degrees
         •    Approximately one-third have some post-secondary education

MidCoast Regional Airport at Wright Army Airfield

The area also is home to MidCoast Regional Airport at Wright Army Airfield, a joint-use aviation facility on Fort Stewart. The airport serves the community's general and corporate aviation needs with a state-of-the-art terminal for civilian and military use, and with hangar space, tie-down areas, crash carts and tower following. The Liberty County Development Authority, the Liberty County Board of Commissioners and the City of Hinesville are civilian partners in the joint-use facility.
